While we’ve already received a few trailers for Park Chan-wook‘s The Handmaiden, the best one yet has arrived today. Featuring a rapid, rhythmic pace as we witness a myriad of evocative scenes, it’s a fantastic tease without spoiling much. The story follows a young Korean female pickpocket from the slums who is hired by a charming con man to join an elaborate scam: she becomes the personal servant of a wealthy Japanese heiress and seduces her.
“The film will provide subtle pleasures here and there, because it is a very talkative and charming film with witty lines. It is the most unusual [film] out of my filmography,” Park Chan-wook tells Korea Times.” I chose this piece after Stoker because I was completely taken with the plot. I read the original English novel Fingersmith by Sarah Waters and it was mesmerizing. The characters were so real and the plot had a shocking reversal. I had been thinking since then that I should definitely make this into a film.”

The Handmaiden will be released by Amazon Studios.
