Could David Lowery have two of the year’s finest films? After coming to Sundance Film Festival with the best feature of the fest, A Ghost Story (our review), he’s starting production on his follow-up, The Old Man and the Gun, early next month, which could give him more than enough time to sneak it out by year’s end. Ahead of the shoot, he’s also already secured distribution and has now expanded his cast. Led by Robert Redford, Casey Affleck, and Sissy Spacek, check out a new synopsis below.

Forrest Tucker (Redford) has been on the wrong side of the law since he was a teen. He grew into a career bank robber who broke out of prison 18 times, including a daring escape from San Quentin at age 70. The film covers his twilight years, and an unprecedented string of daring heists that confound authorities and enchants the public. Wrapped up in this chase are a detective (Affleck) who becomes captivated with Forrest’s commitment to his craft, and a woman (Spacek) who loves him in spite of his chosen profession.

Deadline now reports that Tom Waits, Elisabeth Moss, Danny Glover, Tiki Sumpter, and Isiah Whitlock will round out the rest of the adaptation of the David Grann-penned New Yorker article. Fox Searchlight has also come aboard to distribute the film in U.S., Canada, and the U.K. ahead of the shoot that kicks off on April 3 in Cincinnati. Reported to be Redford’s latest film, it sounds like a fitting send-off in what would mark a reunion after Pete’s Dragon.

Lowery — whose A Ghost Story will arrive on July 7 via A24 — has also been posting a few updates from the set, which one can see below.
