Chances are you’ve already heard the story of Tig Notaro, or at least her landmark 30-minute stand-up following her diagnosis of cancer and the death of her mother. This summer one will get a chance to go deeper into the story and life of the comedian as the documentary Tig arrives on Netflix following a Sundance premiere. Ahead of a release next month, the first trailer has now arrive, which hints at an intimate, life-affirming experience.

We said at Sundance, “Going into a new documentary about the comedian herself and the aftermath of the event, I was curious how much new information we’d get, but directors Kristina Goolsby and Ashley York have crafted a warm, compelling feature with Tig. As much as it is about her comedy the film also delves into the creative process and how to live up to your past work (or if you even want to), as well as her personal struggles and relationships. While it feels a bit cobbled together, technically speaking, the story at the center is a passionately told one and worth seeking out.” Check out the trailer below.

Comedian Tig Notaro had a devastating year. Having just recovered from a life-threatening infection and still in mourning over her mother’s sudden passing, Notaro’s subsequent discovery of bilateral breast cancer left her no choice but to turn profound pain into an ongoing punch line, both on and off the stage. Netflix original documentary, Tig tells the incredible story of her search and discovery of humor and love amid devastating news.

Tig premieres on Netflix on July 17th.
