Considering we’ve waited a handful of years for the next Jonathan Demme narrative film, we’re willing to watch just about anything he puts his name on. The latest project is Gimme the Loot, a film the Rachel Getting Married director is “presenting,” which picked up the grand jury prize at South by Southwest Film Festival last year after being partially funded on Kickstarter.
Snatched up by IFC Films for distribution, the directorial debut of Adam Leon will now get a release this spring and we’ve got the first theatrical trailer today. Just from this brief two-minute preview, one can see the reason for the acclaim its already garnered. Lively and authentic, check out the promising trailer and poster below for the film starring Tashiana Washington, Ty Hickson and Zoë Lescaze.
Synopsis:
Malcom and Sofia are the most determined teenage graffiti-writers in the Bronx. But when a rival gang buffs their latest masterpiece, they hatch a plan to get their revenge by planning the ultimate graffiti tag—to “bomb” the Mets’ home run apple. The only hitch is that they need to raise $500 to pull off their spectacular scheme. Over the course of two whirlwind, sun-soaked summer days, they travel on an epic urban adventure involving black market spray cans, illicit bodegas, stolen sneakers, a high-stakes heist, and a beautiful, stoned girl whose necklace is literally their key to fame. An official selection of the Cannes Film Festival and winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the SXSW Film Festival, and the Independent Spirit Someone to Watch Award, GIMME THE LOOT is the charming, funny, daring story of two taggers that will do anything to become the biggest writers in the city.
Gimme the Loot opens on March 22nd.
