Coming off his small-scale flop Stonewall, Fox is hoping at least a few more people tune in for Roland Emmerich‘s sequel to his 1996 hit, Independence Day. Titled Independence Day: Resurgence, it takes place two decades after the first film, and today brings a second trailer.
In it we see some wild destruction, but it’s barely the tip of the iceberg according to its star. “The battle. That entire sequence – it’s not a quick thing.” Jessie Usher tells Movies.com. “It progresses and gets bigger and it’s ever-changing all the way through to the end. That entire sequence is going to be impressive, to say the least.”
Starring Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, and Sela Ward, check out the trailer below, along with an Earth Day PSA from a familiar face.
From director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin, 1996’s Independence Day shattered opening weekend and total box office records, becoming the year’s top-grossing film. It also became the first movie in history to gross over $500m internationally.
But Independence Day was just the beginning. We always knew they were coming back. After that film redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter in the Independence Day universe delivers a global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
Independence Day: Resurgence opens on June 24th, 2016.
