Tarsem directed one of the most criminally overlooked films of 2008 with The Fall. It is a poetically beautiful saga that unfortunately only mustered up $2.2M here at the box office. Over a year ago we reported his next film, then titled War of the Gods, was a “Caravaggio meets Fight Club, a hardcore actioner done in Renaissance painting style.” Now titled Dawn of War, the project has reportedly been halted says Montreal Gazette (via The Playlist). They report below.

Producers for the film are contemplating whether or not to shoot the film in 3D. Already budgeted at $115 million, if they do decide to make cinema-goers wear those glasses, it will add another $15 million to the bottom line. Tarsem is already deep into pre-production stages, having set up offices at La Cité du Cinéma in Montreal back in the late fall, and filming was set to begin this month. If its decided the film will go the 3D route, there’s no word yet on what kind of delays this might cause, but we would imagine several scenes and sequences will have to go back to the drawing board.

The effects of Avatar are starting to make me sick. I love James Cameron‘s film, but now every other day we are hearing reports of films either getting delayed or extending their budget to get the 3D treatment. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Clash of the Titans, The Cabin the Woods…the list goes on. Does a Tarsem film really need to be in 3D? At least the producers are thinking beforehand, unlike the last minute Clash of the Titans addition. Whether it goes 3D or not, Dawn of War is one of my most anticipated films.

Is the Avatar effect starting to make you sick? What do you think about Dawn of War?
