Despite what your thoughts may be on his filmography, director Scott Hicks‘ next move is always a difficult one to predict. After breaking out with prestige dramas like Snow Falling on Cedars and Shine, he moved to the general rom-com territory with No Reservations before taking a more mature stab at drama with The Boys Are Back and then dropping into a safe money-making zone with the Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Lucky One.

Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, he has been bitten by the YA adaptation bug and signed on to helm Fallen. Based on Lauren Kate‘s bestseller, the gothic fantasy — you guessed it — is already a quadrilogy, so the franchise potential is there. Penned by Kathryn Price and Nicole Millard, the film follows a teenage girl in love triangle, but instead of vampires, there are fallen angels. While that aspect is a bit more intriguing than Twilight, hopefully there’s much more to this material. Check out a synopsis below for the film being shopped around at Berlin.

There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori. Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce–and goes out of his way to make that very clear–she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her. Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story.

Are you looking forward to Hicks directing a YA adaptation?
