I’ve already made my thoughts on Adult World known, and this casting announcement isn’t helping matters. Deadline reports that Shannon Woodward has signed on to play Candance, a “punk-goth with a nosering and a Ramones shirt” who bonds with main character Amy (Emma Roberts) over their mutual desire to be rebellious. Adult World is currently shooting in upstate New York with Scott Coffey behind the camera.
In case you haven’t been paying attention to news pertaining to the movie, Adult World stars Roberts as Amy, a college graduate who moves back in with her parents to pursue her dream of being the next poetry star. But since that doesn’t end up paying the bills, her parents force her into getting a job and she ends up at Adult World, an erotic bookstore. Evan Peters co-stars as Manny, I assume her love interest, and John Cusack is on board to play Amy’s mentor/idol Rat Billings, the most beloved poet of the 90’s.
I’m not against Woodward herself being cast as I found her funny in the first season of Fox’s Raising Hope and I’m all for her branching out into more movies. It’s just the character itself; Candace is the sort of rebellious 20-something that only exists in the minds of people who’ve never met a rebellious 20-something. But there’s also another piece to the puzzle: Adult World is supposed to be both a comedy and a satire of post-graduate life, so there’s a chance that Candace is supposed to be a generic rebel in a “I don’t know what I’m doing” sense. Could Adult World end up being the witty satire that it could be? Probably not. But you never know until the movie’s released and endlessly advertised on MTV. You know it’ll happen.
Is Shannon Woodward a good addition to Adult World?
