With a role initially for Chris Pine (who starred in the play) and Leonardo DiCaprio before that, it looks like George Clooney has chosen another lead for his next possible directing project. Deadline is reporting that Clooney is currently negotiating with Ryan Gosling (Half Nelson, The Notebook) to star in Farragut North.

He would star in that adaption of Beau Willimon‘s play as “a young communications director who works for a fast rising presidential candidate. During the course of the campaign, the idealistic young man falls prey to the backstabbing and other dirty trickery of more seasoned rivals.”

Clooney and Grant Heslov, who head Smokehouse Productions and teamed for Good Night, Good Luck will reunite again for this. I loved GNGL and always welcome adult-geared dramas from Clooney. We can forget about their last disappointing collaboration, The Men Who Stare at Goats. With Gosling proving his post-Notebook worth, he couldn’t be a better choice. They plan to begin production in March.

What do you think of Gosling as a lead in Farragut North? A better choice than Chris Pine?
