In a fascinating interview with Kermode at the Guardian, director Martin Scorsese has revealed some insight on his first 3D feature, Hugo Cabret. While the article is much more about his life and passion for cinema, there are a few tidbits below. I highly recommend heading over to the site for the full interview though.
Before get we into it, Cabret stars Chloe Moretz, Jude Law, Richard Griffiths, Ben Kingsley, Christopher Lee, Sacha Baron Cohen, Emily Mortimer, Ray Winstone, and Michael Stuhlbarg. The film is adaptation of the children’s book by Brian Selznick, set in 1930’s Paris and follows “an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station [who] is wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and a robot.” Here is Scorsese’s quote:
“Every shot is rethinking cinema,” he enthuses, “rethinking narrative – how to tell a story with a picture. Now, I’m not saying we have to keep throwing javelins at the camera, I’m not saying we use it as a gimmick, but it’s liberating. It’s literally a Rubik’s Cube every time you go out to design a shot, and work out a camera move, or a crane move. But it has a beauty to it also. People look like… like moving statues. They move like sculpture, as if sculpture is moving in a way. Like dancers…”
Scorsese’s family adventure hits theaters on December 9th, 2011, in 3D of course.
Are you excited to see 3D done by a master filmmaker?
