Lee Daniels To Direct Amy Adams as Janis Joplin In ‘Get It While You Can’

Written by on October 16, 2012

I’m convinced no matter what the critical reception of his latest film is, Lee Daniels will find work until he’s on his deathbed. While his sophomore film Precious was a hit on the awards circuit, his follow-up the crime drama The Paperboy is decidedly less so. Nonetheless he just wrapped his historical drama The Butler featuring a stellar cast and his next film is already on the table.

The Hollywood Reporter lets us know that Daniels is looking to direct a long-gestating Janis Joplin biopic and has a major star attached with Amy Adams, who has been rumored for the project for the last few years. The film, titled Get It While You Can, comes from a script by producer Ron Terry and his wife Theresa Kounin-Terry, and would follow the rocker in her 1960s heyday.

As we know Martha Marcy May Marlene helmer Sean Durkin is planning his own take on the rock ‘n’ roll star, with Nina Arianda in the lead role, but as is common in Hollywood, these projects will duel in the road to production. Even though the trade reports an early 2013 production start with Focus Features possibly coming on board , there have been many directors attached over the years such as Fernando Meirelles and Catherine Hardwicke, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Daniels jumped to one of his many potential projects first.

Do you want to see a Daniels-directed Joplin biopic? Would you like to see Durkin’s take first?
