With vampire films and television shows repopulating public consciousness everywhere, it appears werewolves are to follow suit. And while recent release The Wolfman was met with less-than-favourable reviews, that hasn’t stopped screenwriter, Solid Snake-voicer and perennial fanboy favourite David Hayter from planning to make his directorial debut with Wolves.Describing the picture as “Twilight with a bit more bite to it, and without abstinence”, Hayter plans to make Wolves a metaphor for teens maturing sexually, while deconstrucing previous werewolf films and removing their mythology.

This will mark Hayter‘s first successful attempt to direct a feature, as the X-Men and X:2 writer was due to helm Black Widow before Lionsgate pulled the plug. He also tried in vain to direct the big-screen adaptation of Watchmen, which he also wrote, before Zack Snyder was handed the reins.

Wolves has not been a smooth ride itself so far, with Winchester and French company TF1 picking up financing and  overseas distribution respectively after it fell through with Crystal Sky. Thomas Dekker and Ray Stevenson had been lined up to star in the first incarnation, whether they will remain with the project is unclear.
