After the success of her debut Mustang — which premiered at Cannes and went on to get nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars — director Deniz Gamze Ergüven is making her first English-language film with Kings, a film set in 1992 LA as tension rises during Rodney King’s infamous trail.

Deadline reports Daniel Craig is now in talks to play one of the only white residents in South Central, who befriends Halle Berry’s character, a tough and protective mother. When all hell breaks loose, Craig’s character helps Berry find her child who is caught in the thick of the violence during the riots. The film will reportedly have a blend of hope and raw emotion akin to Mustang.

This has been a passion project for Ergüven for years, dating back to her graduation from the French Fémis film school. She almost made it as her debut, but instead put it on hold to focus on Mustang. As for Craig, with no Bond films in sight, he’s also staying busy with Todd Field‘s Showtime series Purity and Steven Soderbergh‘s Logan Lucky, which has begun shooting.

Until more news breaks, check out a talk with Ergüven and cast about Mustang below.
