Despite a certain director jumping on board one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood, the best news of last week was the surprise unveiling of our first footage from Joel and Ethan Coen’s latest film, Inside Llewyn Davis. Based on Dave Van Ronk‘s memoir The Mayor of MacDougal Street, the film captures the folk scene in a 1960s New York City and now we’ve got some more details on the project thanks to NY Times.
Along with two new black-and-white stills, which can be seen above and below, it is revealed the film follows just about two weeks in the life of our titular singer-songwriter character Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac), who sings full performances alongside Carey Mulligan and Justin Timberlake. It has even been confirmed that the film could have made the 2012 release calendar, but without a distributor, the filmmakers are going at their own pace, with a public Cannes debut in the cards and likely more concrete distribution news around that time.
The film, which Joel Coen describes as being about “how good you are doesn’t always matter,” will first screen early next month for a private audience before the Grammys. In the meantime, one can hear Van Ronk’s Cocaine Blues and Dink’s Song below, both featured in the film, which aslo stars Garrett Hedlund, John Goodman, F. Murray Abraham and Adam Driver.
