Before we get into the movie news, here’s a quick Geography lesson: the Earth’s crust is made up of fractured plates that are continually moving. Two of these plates, the Pacific and the North American, meet along an 810 mile stretch of California known as the San Andreas Fault. Because the Pacific moves in a different direction relative to the North American plate, the meeting of these two occasionally cause Earthquakes either minor or massive. Essentially, the San Andreas Fault is Mother Nature’s way of saying California is living on borrowed time.
You still awake? Excellent. With the amount of destruction the San Andreas Fault could conceivably cause, it should be a no brainer that it’s ripe to be the subject of a disaster movie. 24 Frames reports that New Line Cinema is looking to put San Andreas 3D into production from a script written by veteran Allan Loeb (21, the upcoming Rock of Ages). The plot isn’t precisely clear, but according to the article it involves a man who is “forced to go on the road to reconcile with his children and his estranged wife, who’s moved away and taken up with another man”. The similarity in story of 2009’s 2012 wasn’t lost on 24 Frames and isn’t lost on me either. And if you couldn’t tell by the title, it’ll also be in three dimensions which, considering it’s about massive Earthquakes, should cause about half the theater to vomit uncontrollably every show.
There has yet to be a director chosen for the project, and the story itself seems generic (plus Loeb’s screenwriting credits are a bit dicey to say the least), but I can’t lie to you and say I’ll be skipping San Andreas 3D when it comes out next year (oh snap, 2012?!? Well-played.). I have a Pavlovian response of joy and excitement whenever I hear about a disaster movie (except for, um, Disaster Movie) being made; there’s just something so fun about watching things crumble into dust. Makes all of our petty squabbles and mundane tasks feel futile and ultimately pointless. Whoa, this got dark. Anyone got a beer?
Considering San Andreas 3D is supposedly coming out next year, expect many more announcements to be made about the project soon. If John Cusack ends up starring, I think Roland Emmerich has the right to sue.
Any interest in San Andreas 3D?
