Ari Folman inches closer and closer to his animated sci-fi follow-up to his Oscar-nominated film Waltz With Bashir, with character actors Paul Giamatti, Danny Huston and Harvey Keitel joining the film, which will look something like this. The name of the film is The Congress (based on The Futurological Congress by Stanislaw Lem). Robin Wright and Kodi Smit-McPhee have been attached for some time now. [The Playlist]
The film will be a live-action/animated hybrid, telling the story of a fledging actress who takes a job for the money: money she needs to care for her ill son. Of course, this comes at a Guy de Maupassant-level price: her likeness is scanned and becomes property of the company that hires her, essentially deeming her useless for further work.
There’s no current release date, but this kind of casting suggests that things are moving forward swimmingly. This little sci-fi genre rejuvenation is inspiring, thanks to passionate directors like Duncan Jones and Folman.
