It’s a scrappy Liam Neeson versus wolves in Joe Carnahan‘s latest thriller, The Grey. The Narc director returns back to a narrower scope after the massive-budget A-Team. There was talk of Oscar potential for Neeson here, but this trailer surely isn’t selling that. Open Road, who is launched their first film Killer Elite this weekend, is set to open the Alaskan adventure in late January.

I don’t see any sort of early platforming for this one, but the entertainment level seems high. Even though I was one of the few that dug Unknown around the same timeframe last year, there seems to be more promise here. Check out the trailer below for the film also starring Dallas Roberts, James Badge Dale, Dermot Mulroney and Frank Grillo.

Synopsis:

A group of oil-rig roughnecks are left stranded on the sub-arctic tundra after their plane experiences a complete mechanical failure and crashes into the remote Alaskan wilderness. The survivors, battling mortal injuries, biting cold and ravenous hunger, are relentlessly hunted and pursued by a vicious pack of rogue wolves.

The Grey hits theaters January 27th, 2012.
