arrival-2

After racking up eight Oscar nominations — Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay among them — the Arrival team are taking advantage of their expected carte blanche. Per THR, production outfit 21 Laps have tapped their Spectacular Now director, James Ponsoldt, for an adaptation of Hugo Award-winning sci-fi short story “Inconstant Moon.” Based on Larry Niven‘s text and scripted by Daniel Casey (10 Cloverfield Lane), the currently untitled project (that title just doesn’t scream “ticket-seller”) concerns a Los Angeles couple “teetering on breaking up with the backdrop of an apocalyptic-level natural disaster that might end the world come sunrise.”

Fox 2000 are supporting the project, as will Ponsoldt’s own 1978 Pictures and Created By.

And if you’ve yet to see Arrival, do note that Paramount will be giving the picture — which we named one of the best films of 2016 — a nationwide rerelease starting tomorrow gussied up with a little something extra: per a press release, “exclusive bonus footage featuring thought-provoking commentary and a behind-the-scenes look from Director Denis Villeneuve, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and other cast and filmmakers.” Consider this your bonus for exercising a little patience, or a studio’s pretty decent excuse for doing the customary awards-season victory lap.
