With everyone from Ben Affleck to Darren Aronofsky considering–then passing on–the crime drama Tales From The Gangster Squad, WB is continuing their search. 24 Frames is reporting three new candidates, each wildly diverse.

After dealing with the undead in his directorial debut, Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer is in discussions with producers Dan Lin and Kevin McCormick. The film, compared to The Untouchables, tells “the story of the Los Angeles Police Department fighting gangland wars and trying to stem the invasion of East Coast Mafia in the 1940s and ’50s is a complicated tale filled with colorful characters — an origin story, in a sense, of modern Los Angeles.”

Also on the list is Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper. It would certainly be an interesting choice after the quiet drama. Gangster Squad is described as “an action movie with humor and snappy dialogue.” One of the most realistic choices is Jose Padilha. You probably haven’t heard of him, but directed the Golden Bear-winning Portuguese “crime and corruption” tale Elite Squad. This sequel, Elite Squad 2, is sitting pretty at 9.1/10 on IMDb.
