“You know how there are no new things? There’s no new war movie, there’s war movies. Over time stuff like The Deer Hunter and Platoon ups it,” Elysium actor William Fichtner recently told AICN. “All of a sudden somebody presents it to you in a way you’ve never seen before. It’s a new bar, a new mark of definitively telling you what something is. In the clips I saw from Elysium I felt like it did that. It really felt like I never saw that movie. It redefined something.”

Coming off his wildly successful directorial debut District 9, it’s difficult not to get excited for what Neill Blomkamp has in store for his follow-up. Sharing at least of portion of Fichtner’s excitement above, we’re intrigued at the first trailer which has landed today, which sees the director continue his style on a much bigger playing field. Set in 2154, the film also tackles another social issue, this time diving into a 99% vs. 1% scenario, but in space. Check it out below for the blockbuster also starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner, Wagner Moura, Alica Braga and Diego Luna.

Synopsis:

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Elysium arrives on August 9th.
