Will Gluck is back with Screen Gems (Easy A), producing a remake of Ed Zwick’s 1986 R-rated relationship drama About Last Night…, which starred Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, James Belushi and Elizabeth Perkins. The original film itself is based on David Mamet’s 1974 play Sexual Perversity In Chicago. [Variety]
Gluck will help in finding a writer and director for the project, which he is producing under his Olive Bridge Productions banner. The story is not all that different from what seems to be going on in his directorial effort Friends With Benefits: what starts as a one night stands for a couple of attractive twentysomethings becomes something more, and the struggle to make it last is more than anyone bargained for. I actually think that movie‘s coming out tomorrow.
Granted, the original film is something of an 80s timepiece, featuring pop-fueled montages mushed together with hard, Mamet-intelligent relationship jargon that lifts it above most others in the romance genre. An update sans poofy hair and legwarmers is far from the worst idea out there. Zwick returned to this material himself, to mixed results, with Love & Other Drugs last year.
Meanwhile, Gluck proved his own worth in John Hughes territory with Easy A, making this Screen Gems decision all the more sensible.
What do you think of Easy A? Have you seen About Last Night…? Does it deserve a remake?
