Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures has announced that actress Diane Lane will play Martha Kent, step-mother of that hero who stands for truth, justice and the American way in the upcoming Superman: Man of Steel. She’ll also be married to Kevin Costner, which makes for an interesting pairing of 80s star beauties-turned-middle-aged actors.
Lane will also star alongside Henry Cavill, who’ll play Clark Kent/Superman, for director Zack Snyder, who’s got Sucker Punch opening later this month and a whole lot to prove, absent of a true blockbuster since 300 a few years back.
The script comes courtesy of David S. Goyer, with Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder.
This casting smells of the Spider-Man reboot, which cast Campbell Scott and Denis Leary as Richard Parker and George Stacy, fathers of the two leads, respectively. Adding youth to the elders in the room makes sense. After all, both Costner and Lane are still very present in Hollywood. Both young viewers and old will find familiarity in their faces.
The film is set for a December 2012 release.
