It seems that the movie to be in these days is Jay Roach‘s new political-comedy, Dog Fight. With Jason Sudeikis, Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, John Lithgow, Dylan McDermott and Brian Cox already starring, Moviehole tells us that funnyman Dan Aykroyd has joined their ranks.

Chris Henchy and Shawn Harwell script details a comedy about “two rival politicians (Ferrell and Galifianakis) running for a congressional seat in a small North Carolina district election.” We’re not sure who Aykroyd is playing, but I’m sure whatever part it is, it will show off his Southern charm we’ve seen many times before. Political comedy isn’t foreign territory for him, by the way; he recently mimicked President Jimmy Carter in Funny or Die’s Presidential Reunion sketch. Galifianakis will also produce under the Everyman Pictures banner, with Ferrell and Funny or Die’s Adam McKay, through Gary Sanchez Productions.

With Aykroyd joining the cast, I can’t help but get deja vu to past SNL skits since he’s the third alum to join Dog Fight — alongside Ferrell and Sudeikis. With filming already in full swing in New Orleans, I don’t think Aykroyd will have any trouble joining the cast of comedy misfits. Better yet, it seems that he’ll have to put his current ventures with the Ghostbusters sequel on hold for the time being, with Dog Fight hitting theaters August 10th, 2012.

How do you feel about Aykroyd joining the Dog Fight?
