With production kicking off in just over a month, Christopher Nolan has been assembling his ensemble for Dunkirk, an IMAX-shot World War II actioner that Warner Bros. have given a prime summer spot on their 2017 slate. Having already cast some familiar faces (Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, and Tom Hardy), newcomers (Jack Lowden, Aneurin Barnard, and Fionn Whitehead), and a requisite One Direction member (Harry Styles), another name has been added to the call sheet.
The Wrap reports that Cillian Murphy, who worked with Nolan on Inception and The Dark Night trilogy, has joined the project. While his specific role is unknown, he’ll be more on the supporting side alongside the well-known group of Hardy, Branagh and Rylance. Murphy, who has done fantastic work in films such as Sunshine and The Wind That Shakes the Barley, will also be seen in Ben Wheatley‘s Free Fire later this year.
Shooting partially on location in Dunkirk, the film is reportedly inspired by Operation Dynamo, a miracle of a mission in 1940 where nearly 340,000 Allied troops were rescued after being trapped by the Nazis in this northern area of France. Also re-teaming with Nolan is composer Hans Zimmer and Interstellar cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema. Nord Pas de Calais have also floated the rumor (which dates back to early March, by our account) that Leonardo DiCaprio will take part, but we’ll wait for confirmation on that one.
Dunkirk will be released on July 21, 2017.
