After a couple bouts with The Amazing Spider-Man, director Marc Webb is returning to his romance-drama roots with Gifted, which has just received its first trailer. Also coming out of the superhero realm, Chris Evans stars as Frank, a single man raising his niece Mary (Mckenna Grace), a prodigy of sorts. Their world is thrown into turmoil when he gets into a custody battle with his mother (Lindsay Duncan). Helping him on his journey is Bonnie (Jenny Slate), one of Mary’s teachers who forms a connection with Frank through her concern for Mary.

Penned by Tom Flynn, who only has one feature script under his belt, the film seems to be shooting for heartfelt and heartbreaking, and it will be interesting to see if Webb can make Gifted a return to form. See the trailer below for the film that also stars Octavia Spencer.

Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy – his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) in a coastal town in Florida. Frank’s plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the seven-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan) whose plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary. Octavia Spencer plays Roberta, Frank and Mary’s landlady and best friend. Jenny Slate is Mary’s teacher, Bonnie, a young woman whose concern for her student develops into a connection with her uncle as well.

Gifted opens April 12th2017.
