With Assassin’s Creed, Ratchet & Clank, The Angry Birds Movie, and Warcraft all landing next year, will the videogame adaptation go the way of the western or will it get a comic book-esque boost in the Hollywood marketplace? Perhaps the riskiest of the bunch is Warcraft from Duncan Jones, a filmmaker who has made the very-small Moon and the relatively-small Source Code before jumping into this CG-heavy adaptation of the hit videogame. We now have the first trailer for the film which, after a few delays, had a prime release date of mid-June 2016 (aka Jurassic World territory for Universal).

“We’ve got an awful lot of introducing to do, both in this movie and inviting audiences in to come see this movie,” Jones tells EW, referencing the trailer. “There’s an entirely new world, new characters. This is beyond the Warcraft faithful, who know what it is that we’re talking about. Also, what kind of subject matter is it? What kind of fantasy is it? There will be different pieces that we have to address over the seven months until our film comes out. Right now, we just want to give everyone a sense of the breadth of the world, the kind of action that’s involved, and a sense of the energy of the movie. As we go along, I’m sure we’ll be introducing people to the broader spectrum of what this big, big film is.”

With a cast featuring Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper, Toby Kebbell, Ben Schnetzer, Rob Kazinsky and Daniel Wu, check out the first trailer below.
