Although it’s already grossed nearly $700 million at the worldwide box office, Warner Bros. are keen to ride the awards wave this weekend, re-releasing Alfonso Cuaron‘s Gravity in nearly 1,000 theaters nationwide. However, unlike a handful of awards contenders, it’s a smart move, considering we can’t imagine the experience of seeing the space thriller theatrically can be replicated at home. To gear up for the release, we’ve got a candid, extensive chat with the editor of the film, Mark Sanger.

Stopping by the Kevin Pollack‘s show, Sanger first opens up about his previous projects, including working as a visual effects editor on a number of Tim Burton films. He then dives into the process of working on Cuaron’s latest and creating such a tightly-wound thriller. As one might know, much of the film was designed before production officially began, so Sanger was in the edit bay for 18 months before George Clooney and Sandra Bullock even arrived. Check out the full conversation below, which begins at the 10:52 mark.

What do you think of Gravity‘s editing? What’s the best-edited film of the year?
