Despite not beginning production until 2014, things are moving fast on the casting front for Guillermo del Toro‘s next feature. With his latest producing effort, Mama, in theaters today, and his monsters vs. robots blockbuster Pacific Rim currently in the editing bay, the busy director is kicking up the development process for his haunted house film Crimson Peak.
On the heels of Emma Stone circling the female lead role for the film, del Toro is reportedly in talks to reteam with one of his previously collaborators. Variety reports that Pacific Rim star Charlie Hunnam is looking to jump aboard the horror film, scripted by del Toro and Matthew Robbins (Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Mimic).
Unfortunately, we know nothing of Hunnam’s role thus far, but with a new rewrite by Lucinda Coxon, it’s been described as being “very set-oriented, [and] classical,” with a modern sensibility resting at its core. This mixture will allow his film to “subvert the old rules” of what, as he puts it, are the subgenres “grand dames” — those being The Haunting, The Shining, The Exorcist, The Omen, and The Innocents. Considering Hunnam has no other features booked, this reteam seems like a smart decision, and if Pacific Rim does well, you can be that they’ll be together again for the planned sequel.
