Can it be? After a tumultuous last few days for the cast, crew and producers behind the upcoming western Jane Got a Gun (which included not only their director Lynne Ramsay departing, but its villain Jude Law as well), the first day of production has successfully been completed, according to screenwriter Brian Duffield. While Warrior‘s Gavin O’Connor continues to steer his newfound project, he also has some casting to complete.
With the villain role up for grabs, LA Times has reported a few possible replacements for Law. Brothers stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire are reportedly on the shortlist, as well as Jeff Bridges. The age difference here is apparent, but all these actors have had experience in the west, with Gyllenhaal’s stellar Brokeback Mountain, Maguire in Ride with the Devil and Bridges — well, if he wasn’t an actor, I bet he would be a cowboy.
Whoever gets cast would play the leader of a gang who exerts violent strength on a dissenting member; hoping to save the family farm, his wife, Jane Hammond (Portman), tracks down an old flame to help her stand off against those lowlifes planning to make some final statement with their family. As things begins to escalate, she learns about the art of protecting oneself in the dangerous, violent wild west. As for Ramsay’s departure, there has been many rumors swirling, but hopefully we’ll get some concrete info soon, along with this new casting.
Who would you like to see step in for Law?
