After delivering one of the finest animations ever made with Waltz with Bashir, Ari Folman followed it up with The Congress, a divisive sci-fi drama that got a fairly quiet release late this summer. We imagine he’ll get more attention for his next feature, an animated feature which tells the story of Anne Frank. As production began a few months ago, we now have our first look thanks to stills, concept art and some snaps from the actual set.

The extensive animation process is currently underway at London’s Passion studios, under the supervision of both Folman and legendary puppet maker Andy Gent (responsible for work on Fantastic Mr. Fox, Frankenweenie, and more), as well as Folman’s art director and illustrator David Polonsky. Featuring a mix of stop-motion and 2D animation, the story will be told from the perspective of Frank’s imaginary friend Kitty, who comes to life as a puppet. Check out the images below thanks to THR and CinemaScope for the film we imagine won’t be done for a few more years.
