Three big money debuts marked the box office this weekend. Animated film Megamind took the top spot, earning $47.6 million. It easily handled the antics of Zach Galifiankis and Robert Downey, Jr. in their comedy debut Due Date. That film earned an impressive $33.5 million in second position.
Tyler Perry‘s For Colored Girls opened to the tune of $20.1 million to finish third on the weekend, reiterating that Perry is always good for a decent box office showing.
Farther down the list, Secretariat battled Zenyatta for horse-racing supremacy. The former earned $4 million in its 5th week, totaling $51 million, while the latter lost for the first time in her career in her last race at Churchill Downs.
Oscar contender 127 Hours opened in 4 theaters, earning $266,000 total (averaging $66,500). Expect big earnings here when it expands its release.
Next week sees the opening of news comedy Morning Glory on Wednesday, and a pair of thrillers in Skyline and Unstoppable. I expect Denzel Washington‘s strong fan base to carry Unstoppable to the top spot in the box office.
