Vera Farmiga is trying to do it all these days, and she’s doing a pretty good job. She’s got her directorial debut under her belt (Higher Ground) to be released by Sony Pictures Classics later this year (August 12th), a nice little part in a critically/commercially successful in a smart, small studio film (Source Code) and another role in a big studio blockbuster, starring Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington, on the way.

The film’s Universal Pictures’ Safe House, directed by Daniel Espinosa (Snabba Cash), and it’s already in production. The picture tells the story of a young agent (Reynolds) who, while baby-sitting an agency safe house, is attacked by a group of villains determined to capture the criminal (Washington) being kept inside. The young agent must transport the criminal from the house and away from the other bad guys.

Think of it as a higher profile remake of John Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13, with Reynolds and Washington instead of Ethan Hawke and Laurence Fishburne. Brendan Gleeson, Sam Shepard, Robert Patrick and Liam Cunningham are also starring. [Deadline]
