Last month, a somewhat disappointing trailer dropped for One Day, Lone Scherfig‘s (An Education) highly-anticipated adaptation of David Nicholls‘ bestselling novel, which you should read if you haven’t yet. Much of that anticipation comes in the form of Anne Hathaway, who will star alongside Jim Sturgess in the film. She seemed to be out of her comfort zone based on the initial footage, and, for my money, Scherfig needed to look no further than her last film to find the ideal casting choice for this role: Carey Mulligan.

Focus Features has continued their marketing scheme, nevertheless, this time in the form of a UK trailer that, if mostly the same as the US one, features a small handful of more promising scenes. The opening lines of the trailer, for instance, exemplify the witty words that made Nicholls‘ novel so readable — rather than the mostly generic ones heard in the first trailer. [The Playlist]

It’s always easy to speculate, though. Best to just wait for the oncoming August 19 release date before jumping to any conclusions.

Synopsis:

After only one day together in 1989, Emma Morley (played by Ms. Hathaway) and Dexter Mayhew (played by Mr. Sturgess) cannot stop thinking about one another. Over the next twenty years, key moments of their relationship are revealed on the same day – July 15th – of each year. Dex and Em face friendship and fights, hopes and missed opportunities, laughter and tears. And as the true meaning of this one crucial day is revealed, they must come to grips with the nature of love and life itself.

What do you think of the early footage for One Day? Do you think the film will turn out to be an Oscar contender?
