10 Cloverfield Lane

Back in the summer of 2007, ahead of Michael Bay‘s Transformers, we were treated with a teaser that elicited much reaction and surprise from audiences — a rare feat in Hollywood’s normal marketing onslaught. With enticing footage and little else known, that film would become Cloverfield, an impressive found-footage monster invasion film that many have been clamoring for a sequel ever since.

Well, producer J.J. Abrams went ahead and make a follow-up of sorts — and no one outside of the filmmakers knew. Attached to another Michael Bay film, 13 Hours, a teaser for a film called 10 Cloverfield Lane arrived late last night. For those keeping track, it was easy to tell this was Dan Trachtenberg‘s debut, once titled Valencia and starring John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher Jr. However, it’s indeed taking place in the universe of Cloverfield, and it comes out in two months.

“The idea came up a long time ago during production,” Abrams tells Collider. “We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.” Written by Josh Campbell, Matthew Stuecken, and Whiplash‘s Damien Chazelle, it’s an impressive tease, but from what we’ve heard, those expecting another monster-filled feature might be disappointed as this is said to be more of a small-scale drama. We certainly can’t wait to see the results, and hope this isn’t the last Cloverfield anthology film of sorts.
