Sony Pictures has beat out two other studios for Pan, a Peter Pan origin spec with Channing Tatum attached to star. [/Film, via THR]
That’s right, you read that sentence correctly. Tatum is not only attached to the script, he evidently came up with the premise, along with his producing partner Reid Carolin and Eric Bromberg. They approached Shattered Glass and Breach writer/director Billy Ray with the idea, and brought in producer Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland). Together with Roth Films’ Palek Patel and:
The five of them further developed the idea into the pitch, which envisioned Pan and Captain Hook as brothers.
Well, that’s a new one. This approach echoes the original script which became Ridley Scott‘s Robin Hood: Nottingham would have portrayed the Sheriff of Nottingham as a hero and Robin Hood as the villain. That idea was scrapped when someone (Ridley Scott, probably) realized that they’d have to spend most of their marketing resources on explaining their revisions and why they seem to be intentionally confusing people.
Marc Forster‘s Finding Neverland had all the Peter Pan I could handle, thanks. With Roth’s Alice in Wonderland now a two-time Oscar winner, Sony and the Roth team are hoping to duplicate that blockbuster success with a Peter Pan retread.
Can you see Channing Tatum as Peter Pan? How about Captain Hook? How about Tinkerbell?
