We’ve been waiting to see what Irish director Ruairi Robinson would come up with his for his directorial debut, and now we finally have an answer. The Oscar-nominated director worked on the upcoming live-action Akira script and recently debuted his latest short Blinky, starring Max Records (Where The Wild Things Are, The Brothers Bloom). Variety now reports what his first feature will be.

Teaming with Lionsgate U.K. and Harry Brown producer Kris Thykier, Robinson will direct a high-concept sci-fi thriller titled The Fallen. For around $35 million, the film will follow “an alien spaceship that crash lands in Russia. When it creates a 400-mile electronic dead-zone, international special ops teams are sent in to neutralize it.” Andrew Will has written the script, with his latest project Archangel to be directed by Tron: Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski.

Watching Robinson’s shorts (some available here), one can tell he has a firm grasp on visual effects and storytelling. Although there is a mountain of alien invasion projects coming in the next few years, this is definitely one to keep an eye on.

The Fallen will shoot in early 2012 and expect a release later that year or in 2013.
