It was announced in 2008 that Blade Runner and Alien director Ridley Scott would direct a film surrounding the popular Hasbro board game Monopoly. Back then it was a crazy idea, but now that we have Battleship, Candy Land, Erector Set and Stretch Armstrong films in development it doesn’t seem too ridiculous. Executive producer and Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner spoke to MTV regarding the project that “would tackle the hot-button topic of real-world financial crises”. Check out his quote below.

Ridley is still onboard and wants to be part of this and we’re very excited about this, probably for 2012…13…somewhere in the future. The great part about Monopoly is the history, literally the history of the creation of the brand and the fact that the brand is 75 years old so you have this great opportunity for the real history as well as the fictional history to tell stories of families and characters over a brief period of time.

The script is being written by Pamela Pettler, who was behind the disappointing 9. Goldner called it “great,” but it may not be “all there yet.” When I first heard about the project, it sounded kind of ridiculous, but I wouldn’t mind an ultra-realistic tale set in the Monopoly world.

Ridley Scott has been very on and off the past decade. I loved Matchstick Men, Black Hawk Down and Kingdom of Heaven: Director’s Cut, but Gladiator, American Gangster and Body of Lies were all underwhelming. I hope Robin Hood turns out well, but it looks quite generic. Scott also has plans to do an Alien prequel before working on Monopoly.

What do you think about Ridley Scott’s Monopoly movie?
