With a mountain of controversy piling up, it was only a matter of time before a distributor went ahead and picked up Paul Schrader’s erotic LA-set drama The Canyons. Starring Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen, we’ve finally got word on when we can see the project, as IFC Films announced they’ve acquired the Bret Easton Ellis-scripted drama and plan a early summer release.
We’ve also got updates on a number of other releases from 2013 and beyond. Next up, one will be able to see Harmony Korine‘s Spring Breakers (review) a bit sooner, as A24 have moved up the release one week, with a limited run beginning on March 15th before a March 22nd nationwide bow. Tribeca Film also revealed they will be giving Lenny Abrahamson‘s drama What Richard Did (review), starring upcoming Transformers 4 lead Jack Reynor a spring 2013 theatrical and VOD bow.
Back to IFC Films, Fangoria is reporting the independent distributor will be giving two Cannes 2012 films a release soon. Brandon Cronenberg’s directorial debut Antiviral (review) will bow on April 12th, while Ben Wheatley’s Kill List follow-up Sightseers (review) will land on May 10th, with both films getting a VOD and limited theatrical release. Shortly after, Fox Searchlight will release Zal Batmanglij‘s follow-up to Sound of My Voice, the eco-terrorist thriller The East (review), on May 31st.
Moving way down the calendar, The Weinstein Company’s YA adaptation Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters will arrive on about a year from now, on Valentine’s Day 2014. Last, and perhaps least, a mysterious project from Despicable Me creators Illumination Entertainment will be hitting July 3rd, 2015. Could it be another Dr. Seuss adaptation or an original project? We’ve got a long time to figure out and many other films to see inbetween, so stay tuned for updates.
