Last year Paul Bettany proved his action hero prowess as an avenging angel in the so-bad-it’s-awesome apocalypse picture Legion. Now he’s back, re-teaming with Legion director Scott Charles Stewart and saving the world as a sacrilegiously sexy holy man in Priest, where he fights not evil angels, but vampires. For its unrepentant lunacy alone, I’m excited.

We’ve shared the over-the-top action-packed trailer, and now we’ve got the film’s poster, courtesy of Coming Soon.

Synopsis: A legendary Warrior Priest from the last Vampire War now lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the Church. When his niece is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires, Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on an obsessive quest to find her before they turn her into one of them. He is joined on his crusade by his niece’s boyfriend, a trigger-fingered young wasteland sheriff, and a former Warrior Priestess who possesses otherworldly fighting skills.

It’s The Searchers meets Legion with vampires. As an ardent appreciator of absurd cinema, I could not be more excited.

Priest opens May 13, 2011.

Are you as inexplicably drawn to Priest as I am?
