Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.
Museum of the Moving Image
The essential “The Essential John Ford” begins this weekend, with titles including Young Mr. Lincoln and The Grapes of Wrath.
Borzage, Ford, Gone with the Wind, and more play for “Glorious Technicolor.”
Kiss Me Kate, the John Wayne-led Hondo, and a 3-D rarities program are being made available.
IFC Center
A print of Ozu‘s Late Spring can be seen before noon.
Tim Burton‘s Batman plays at midnight.
A 4k restoration of RoboCop plays at the same time.
It’s “Independence Day Weekend at Nitehawk,” and with it there are midnight screenings of Starship Troopers, and Without a Stitch (Jaws is sold-out). Smokey and the Bandit plays before noon, with brunch and a musical performance included.
Film Forum
Restorations of Goodfellas and The Third Man run all weekend.
Sunshine Cinema
Jaws is offered.
Anthology Film Archives
Two documentary programs are playing on Sunday.
