Despite making over a massive $750 million at the worldwide box office this summer, The Amazing Spider-Man was a fairly cookie-cutter superhero film with not much left to converse over. Perhaps most disappointing of all was what the man behind the camera Marc Webb promised based on his first feature, then ultimately delivered. After showing a keen visual eye in his debut 500 Days of Summer, his sophomore effort ultimately felt like he was simply a puppet under Sony’s guidance.

But like any successful property — and a superhero one at that — a sequel is coming. Announced in a press release today, Sony has confirmed both Webb and stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone will be returning for the project. There’s no telling what the story will contain but Transformers and Star Trek scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have been set to rewrite an original script from James Vanderbilt.

As previously reported, this deal for Webb may require him to do two films with Fox Searchlight after he completes this one. It’s far down the line, but one possibility may be Age of Rage, a futuristic, Lord of the Flies-like picture scripted by Mark Heyman (Black Swan). But for now, Webb will only be seeing pure Spidey for the next few years of his life.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 lands on May 2nd, 2014, with production kicking off early next year.
