Coming off his unsuccessful Let the Right One In remake, Let Me In, Cloverfield director Matt Reeves is trying to decide what his next project will be. He seems to be staying in similar territory, as last week we reported he was attached to an adaptation of Ray Nelson‘s sci-fi short story 8 O’Clock in the Morning. I would love to seem him return to his sci-fi beginnings, but Deadline reports a different project on the horizon.
Reeves has added The Passage to his directing queue. Based on Justin Cronin‘s hit novel, the plot follows “an experiment that goes awry and creates a swarm of bloodthirsty vampires that bring the world to the brink of extinction.” Cronin also has plans release the rest of the trilogy including The Twelve and The City of Mirrors in 2012 and 2014, respectively.
Oscar-nominated writer John Logan, who was behind such films as Gladiator, The Last Samurai, Rango, and The Aviator, will rewrite the script under Reeves’ supervision. Logan also scripted Martin Scorsese‘s Hugo Cabret and Ralph Fiennes‘ directorial debut Coriolanus. He is also busy with Sam Mendes‘ Bond 23, which will begin production this fall. With a gritty, violent tone compared to 28 Days Later and The Stand, one can check out a longer synopsis below.
In The Passage, a group of terminally ill cancer patients get healthy after being subjected to the bites of bats in South America. Naturally, the government see this as a cure for the disease and starts experimenting. They end up with a legion of nearly indestructible, telepathic vampire masters that begin infecting the populace.
I’m a bit tired of vampires and would like to see Reeves take on the other sci-fi project, or even Cloverfield 2, before this. Logan is talented though and the work he has put into this make it a bigger priority.
What project do you want Reeves to take on next?
