Hail Caesar 10

For some time now, Disney, alongside Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, have been developing a remake of Splash, their sleeper success from 1984 that is partially responsible for the stardom of Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah. They’ve now come up with quite an enticing pitch, according to Deadline, who report that Channing Tatum and Jillian Bell are in talks to lead the remake — and not in the roles you might initially presume.

The original concerned someone (Hanks, now Bell) who is saved by a mermaid (Hannah, now Tatum) years ago and reunites with the creature as a human, not realizing who or what it really is. While the new stars, who would reunite after 22 Jump Street, don’t quite need the boost the original gave its leading duo, this new iteration penned by Marja-Lewis Ryan leaves us looking forward to the prospects in ways we wouldn’t have expected.

As for where to find them next: Bell can be seen next in Office Christmas Party, while Tatum will star in the upcoming Steven Soderbergh film Logan Lucky and the Kingsman sequel. While we await more details, check out the original’s trailer, as well as Hanks discussing that film on two different talk shows a few decades apart.
