It’s only been a little over 24 hours since the Cannes 2014 line-up was announced and the floodgates have certainly opened. One can catch up on everything thus far here and today we’ve rounded up a variety of media from films premiering at the festival.
First up, after a batch of official behind-the-scenes stills the first image from Michel Hazanavicius‘s follow-up to The Artist, a modern-day riff of Fred Zinnemann‘s 1948 film The Search has landed. Revolving around a displaced mother’s tireless search for her son (in the original, it was a young Auschwitz survivor in the aftermath of WWII), the film stars Bérénice Bejo as an NGO employee on assignment in Chechnya. Clocking in at 2 hours and 40 minutes, one can see the image above (via The Playlist) for the film also starring Annette Bening.
After starring in two films at Cannes last year, Mathieu Amalric will be returning with La chambre bleue (aka The Blue Room), a drama in which he not only leads, but also directs and co-writes. Playing in the Un Certain Regard section, it follows a man and woman who meet eight times in eleven months to make love, unraveling to much more. The first NSFW teaser has now arrived for the film based on Georges Simenon‘s novel, and can be see below.
Next up, following the extraordinary Once Upon a Time in Anatolia, director Nuri Bilge Ceylan will be returning to the festival with Winter Sleep and while we don’t have a first look yet, we’ve got a brief treat. After wrapping the film on location in Cappadocia, Turkey, he discussed with Sony on shooting the project with their F65 CineAlta camera. The below video is more of an advertisement than anything, but it should make the wait a bit easier.
Lastly, both Bertrand Bonello (House of Tolerance) and Naomi Kawase (Suzaku, The Mourning Forest) will be returning to Cannes with new dramas, competing for the Palme d’Or, and we have the first posters for both. First up, the former’s film is the biopic on one of fashion’s biggest icons, Saint Laurent (not to be confused with another film on the same subject released this year), and features Gaspard Ulliel, Léa Seydoux, Brady Corbet, Jérémie Renier, and Louis Garrel.
Meanwhile, the latter’s feature is Still the Water and takes place during the full-moon night of traditional dances set in August. Set on the Japanese island of Amami-Oshima, the drama centers on a 14-year-old boy who finds a dead body floating in the sea. The young man enlists the help of his girlfriend to solve the mystery and the pair will learn to become adults by experiencing the interwoven cycles of life, death and love. Check out the posters below, which includes the first one-sheet for Alice Rohrwacher‘s Monica Bellucci-led Le meraviglie, also competing for the Palme d’Or.
Cannes Film Festival runs from May 14th to May 25th.
Which of the above films are you most looking forward to?
