Hail To The King, Baby. I won’t even bother harping on how ridiculous the notion of an Evil Dead remake is (I’m sure hoards of fanboys are all over that one), but love it or hate it, director Fede Alvarez (Panic Attack!) is bringing us more boomstick, complete with some writing touch-ups by Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body). While news of Cody’s involvement has brought more jeers than cheers, the following update might quell some of the trepidation out there in the blogosphere.
According to Cinema Blend (via El Pais and Bleeding Cool), it would appear that none other than Ash himself, Mr. Bruce Campbell (who producing alongside Sam Raimi), will be making a cameo appearance in the forthcoming waste of time remake, although his specific role has yet to be revealed. Alvarez only reveals that Campbell “will be in a cameo towards the end of the film,” but doesn’t shed any light on whether or not he’ll be reprising an older version of Ash, or if he’ll be on the wrong end of the chainsaw this time around (Or neither. There’s that too).
Cinema Blend goes on to note Alvarez’s disregard for the franchise’s loyal fanbase, making the important point that disregarding them seems to eliminate any need for a remake. While I consider myself a fan of the original trilogy, I don’t go crying blasphemy at the man. Go for it Freddy, have yourself some fun. I’ll be cozied up enjoying killer trees and talking deer heads for the umpteenth time with the rest of your shunned audience.
What do you think of Campbell making an appearance? Does it make the prospect of a remake any better?
