After his much-deserved Oscar win for the superbly crafted A Separation, director Asghar Farhadi is wasting no time getting back behind the camera. Variety reports the Iranian helmer is planned to shoot his next project in Paris this fall. The French-language film has no title or plot details, but that will likely all be unveiled come Cannes in May.
Alexandre Mallet-Guy, of Memento Films, will produce the film and said casting will also be announced around that time. He also denied rumors that this project is one that Farhadi previously planned, of a romance between an Iranian girl and a boy from North Africa. No other details are known, but after how much we adored his latest, be sure to check back.
While he can celebrate all he wants here for his Academy Award win, we also learned that Farhadi will be doing no such thing back home. A Tehran party was promptly canceled for the director with no reasoning by the government, but it is assumed to be due to his Western acceptance, as well as the plot of his latest film, which deals with a couple contemplating leaving the country. I don’t want to stir up any conflict, but I feel sorry the guy can’t even have a good time there. Farhadi, when you complete your next film, we’ll be waiting with open arms over here.
