There are many reasons one could argue for Cannes’ 2016 lineup as their best in recent years; the most persuasive might be its plurality of options, country- and genre-wise. (Yes, this is said in acknowledgement of how numerous Eastern nations are not represented much or at all, as well as the dearth of female filmmakers.) There’s good evidence in this globe-spanning round-up of stills and posters, all showcasing titles we are (to varying degrees) excited about.
Collected, then, are: a veritable cornucopia of bright new images from the Michaël Dudok de Wit-directed Studio Ghibli-Wild Bunch co-production The Red Turtle; Isabelle Huppert looking very suave and dangerous in Paul Verhoven‘s Elle lovely widescreen compositions from Cristian Mungiu‘s Graduation and new images from Romanian counterpart Cristi Puiu‘s Sieranevada; a set of photos from the Bruno Dumont-directed, Juliette Binoche-led Slack Bay; and, courtesy FilmItalia, Bérénice Bejo and others in Marco Bellocchio‘s Fai Bei Sogni (or Make Beautiful Dreams).
There’s also the first poster for Xavier Dolan‘s It’s Only the End of the World, shared by the filmmaker over Twitter, and a new set for Park Chan-wook‘s The Handmaiden, a picture from which we’ve already seen many an enticing item.
