Well, this is the sort of fit that makes one wonder why they didn’t come together directly off the bat. Director Kyle Newman struggled through seeing his Star Wars-centered comedy Fanboys actually get a release, back in 2007. The love letter to this sci-fi saga was repeatedly pushed back and re-tooled until it finally hit theaters in 2009, where it barely made an impact. The helmer is now getting another chance at the universe of George Lucas in a new project.
Sitting near the top of last year’s Black List was Evan Susser and Van Robichaux‘s script for Chewie, described as “a satirical, behind-the-scenes look” at Lucas’ production of Star Wars, told through the perspective of Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew. Now Newman has come aboard to the helm the film, which expands as we follow the actor balancing “a career as a hospital worker while chasing Hollywood dreams by playing a suited alien who would go on to become one of the most iconic screen sidekicks in modern times.”
As he should be, Mayhew is also involved in the production, tweeting the news of Newman’s attachment and saying he’s “hopeful it can move forward,” with the director adding, “it’s going to be a special one.” Newman will also take a pass on the script and considering his admiration for the franchise, fans should be happy. I’d have to imagine Lucas would be involved somehow, even if it’s just for approval, but I’m more looking forward to something coming from this beloved universe that fans can be proud of, seemingly a rare occurrence nowadays. So, starting getting your picks in now for who should be cast as Luke, Leia, Han Solo and the rest of the gang — I’m hoping for some recurring appearances.
What do you think of Newman taking on Chewie?
