Writer/director Katie Aselton – wife of Cyrus co-writer-director Mark Duplass – talked to The Playlist about her next project while promoting the January 14th DVD release her directorial debut, The Freebie starring Dax Shepard.
After turning down a bunch of directing offers, Aselton says she’s branching out in a big way:
“It’s a thriller, something bloody and gory and beautiful,” Aselton said of her next movie. “I hope its within my wheelhouse but if feel that it’s beyond me then I’m probably going to call in back up… but it’s definitely going to happen, regardless.”
Unlike The Freebie, which grew out of a story idea and plenty of improvisation, Aselton’s next film will have a fully fleshed out script:
“Mark and I are batting the story back and forth right now. This one will be fully scripted because there’s a lot more action.”
I haven’t seen The Freebie, but judging Aselton’s connection to the experiment-loving Duplass Brothers, we can expect an interesting approach to a genre picture… although I can imagine a “mumblecore” thriller being a well of anti-excitement.
Aselton also dropped hints on the progress of Jeff Who Lives At Home, starring Jason Segel and Ed Helms, her husband Mark’s follow up to he and his brother Jay’s 2010 breakout film Cyrus:
“I had a cameo, I was in one scene with Jason Segel, and for the very first time in my career I was asked to be the straight man, which was a little hard,” she laughed. “But he was very funny around me. It was great.”
When asked for more details about the current state of the film, all she could offer is, “They’re still cutting it.” Although she added, “It’s very good, though.”
Are you looking forward to Jeff Who Lives At Home?
