“The world needs more Pee-wee Herman” according to Judd Apatow and he is going to do his part to make it so. Variety is reporting the prolific comedy producer “is developing an untitled Pee-wee Herman feature for Universal.” Paul Reubens is working with Paul Rust (Inglourious Basterds, I Love You, Beth Cooper) on the script which follows the “iconic geek in a road pic built around a gigantic adventure.”
Apatow, who met Reubens at his Pee-wee Herman revival show at the Nokia Theater earlier this year, said the following:
I am so excited to be working with Paul Reubens — who is an extraordinary and groundbreaking actor and writer. It’s so great to watch him return with such relevance.
Reubens added:
There is no one like Judd in our business — he loves comedy with emotion and heart, and he sees what we do as art. I can’t believe I’m getting this opportunity to be working with him.
Apatow won’t be directing, but I hope they find a solid helmer for what could turn out to be a very interesting project. I was never a fan of any of Reubens’ work but I’m intrigued to see what this project brings.
What do you think about a Apatow/Herman collaboration?
